- Dal (Masoor dal or chana dal) – 2 cups
- Palak/ Spinach – a bunch – 150 gms
- Onion – 1 medium – sliced
- Green chilli – 2 slit
- Ginger – 2 tsp – chopped
- Garlic – 1 tsp chopped
- Curry leaves – 5-6 leaves
- Salt – a pinch – to taste
- Jeera powder -a pinch
- Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
- Vegetable/Coconut oil – 1 tbsp
- Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
- Cumin seeds – ¼ tsp
- Water – 2 cups
Method of Preparation
- Wash and soak the dal for at least 30 minutes.
- Wash and chop the palak/spinach.
- To a pressure cooker, heat up some oil and splutter the mustard seeds, followed by cumin seeds, curry leaves, ginger, garlic, slit green chilli, sliced onions and salt. The flame should be on medium.
- Once the onions had turned translucent (soft), stir in the turmeric powder for a minute , followed by soaked dal, palak and enough water. Close the lid, and pressure cook till everything is well cooked. It might take 2-3 whistles.
- Once the dal and palak is well cooked, check on for salt and add jeera powder.
- Dal palak is ready to be served.
Tips & tricks
- If you forget to soak the dal earlier, soaking in hot water for 15 minutes will do the magic.
